Asphalt Safety and Best Practices Introduction Asphalt is a strong adhesive used for road paving, roofing tar, roll-roofing, roofing felt, shingles, pipe covering, floor tile, waterproofing, and many other products and processes. Asphalt is a dark brown or black substance derived from crude oil.
Cutback Asphalt is manufactured by blending asphalt cement with a petroleum solvent. There are three major types of Cutback Asphalt based on the relative evaporation of the solvent: Rapid-Curing (RC), Medium-Curing (MC) and Slow-Curing (SC). Rapid-Curing Cutback Asphalt is used primarily for surface treatments and tack coat.
These cutback grades can also be used in the process of manufacturing the pre-mix asphalt, which is used in patch repairs. Spray Sealing. Cutback bitumen types are widely used in spraying sealing applications, particularly in low temperatures where they offer a much better initial stone retention because of their lower viscosity.
Although straight-run and air-rectified bitumens are the main types used in paving asphalt mixes, as described above, cutback (class 3) and emulsified (class 4) bitumens are commonly used to provide a waterproof layer under new pavement surfaces and sometimes to improve bonding between various layers of asphalt pavement.
