That doesn't really look like fiber cement siding. Fiber cement looks like hardibacker board. Your picture looks more like T-111 siding. It looks like wood showing in the crack. Fiber cement has a lot of cement in it and can snap or shatter and doesn't look like wood when broken. It is usually only ¼"-5/16" thick.

Thanks for this post. My 100+ year old house has wood clapboard with horizontal cracks. I wonder how common such cracks are. Mine seem to be on the S- and W-facing sides. To fix this, I've tried wood filler and MH Ready Patch. The former wasn't easy to work with and doesn't seem to have much strength to prevent the crack from reappearing.
