Lead Mining in Derbyshire and the Peak District The first smelting of Derbyshire lead ore, known as galena, was some 3500 years ago. Two thousand years ago the Romans made it an important industry and, for two hundred years up to 1780, the Peak was the most important lead mining area in the world.
With so much lead mining in the area it would have been a very lucrative business and right on the doorstep. In more recent times, Winster men worked at the Mill Close Mine, near Stanton-in-Peak, the richest mine in Britain by 1931, when it raised 26,000 out of the 29,000 tons for the whole of Britain.
