OK, I'm replacing my right side crank seal on my 1980 RM250 because the bike couldn't go more than 20 minutes without fouling a plug and the jetting was actually a bit lean. Leakdown test showed a bit too fast of a pressure loss from 5 psi. Anyway, the manual shows the seal with the open side facing the crank.
Crank Seal on a 97 CR-250. Mine are not leaking luckily (knock on wood) but, my curriousity begs me to ask. I was told by the Honda Dealer you do not have to actually split the Crank Case Halves to do the seal. (I always like to ask atleast 2 people) LOL

The stator side crank seal should be about ~6mm deep, the clutch side crank seal should be flush. What I usually do is use a cr250 adapter plate to push the seal in, keep even pressure on all screws and it will be pushed in around 5-6mm deep.

When installing main crank seals, use a liberal amount of grease on the inner seal lip area and crakshaft seal shaft area (make sure shaft is clean, corrosion free). Make sure you have an accurate way to measure 6MM for the left side Seal and Flush for the Right. Use Loctite (optional) on the OD of the seal to keep the seal in place.

The seal was hanging out like the picture posted by AXaxiom without the axle block. Putting the new seal took a good bit of effort so I find it had to believe crank pressure pushed it out. Because of the amount of oil sucked the pipe had about a half cup of spooge in it.
