The ball turner works very well but whenever I want to use it I have to remove the topslide in order to attach the ball turner. The alternative configuration is the make a ball turner that swings about the lathe axis in the vertical plane.
I started to post a reply to January's discussion on ball turners but what the heck it's kinda spring-like and everything should start anew. Ball Turner. Some time back I watched a video on you tube of someone turning a ball on a small lathe, what a novel idea but never considered making one until recently. I can see some benefits other than turning balls so I began looking for some sort of print to build one. No prints that I could find so I decided to build one on the fly using ...

The process range of spherical diameter is 550mm - 1800mm, it can realize grinding and other works. The bed adopts rectangular guide rail with good stability and rigidity. The function of ball turning lathe:
To create a smooth external radius, machinists employ a ball radius turner. This is a simple device that fixes to the tool arm of the lathe, and allows the cutting tool to pivot smoothly and evenly along a radius, removing material as it does so. How to use a radius ball turner. Ball turners are available in a variety of shapes, sizes, and styles.

I just finished building a ball turning attachment to mount on the cross slide of my 12" Craftsman lathe. My first attempt to turn a ball turned out less than I expected. I need some assistance in the proper way to set up the tool to make the cuts. Oh, the tool cut great, was centered...

I want to make a > or = 2 inch ball turner but there is not enough space between the top of the compound slide and the tip of the tool. So I will make two different different ball turning attachments; one tool post for small balls and one attachment for > 2 inch balls.
The ball turner needs to be compact enough to fit in this space. More so, as the radius of the largest ball has to be accommodated. I've seen a design that used a boring head to hold and adjust the cutting tool, but holding my 2" boring head up to the lathe showed this to be an impossibly tight squeeze.

This radius turner can turn a ball nearly 4" in diameter, and coves of more than 6" in radius. I have used it for coves much more frequently than spheres. The first step in this design is measuring your lathe. This particular turner works in a variety of lathes, but is designed specifically for 12" and larger lathes. It can easily be scaled down.
I like your ball turner Fabrickator, that's how I was going to make mine, but milling on my lathe is not precise enough with the one and only vertical slide available here. The ways on the slide I had were hopeless, going from tight to loose in a matter of mm. Might have to do some experimental work with an angle plate I think.
Back Radius Turning Tool cuts a ball-shaped end or turns a radius on the end of a workpiece. It's simple to use: mount the tongue of the outer frame (approximately 3/8" square) in your lathe's tool post.
A ball turning attachment is really just a mechanism that cause the cutting edge to follow a circular path which is the outside of the ball being cut. There are two different ways this can be done. The cutting edge can turn in the horizontal plane or it can turn in a vertical plane lying along the axis of the lathe..
