Bauxite Industry | Encyclopedia

Bauxite Industry. BIBLIOGRAPHY. Bauxite is the only commercially viable ore used as a source material for primary aluminum production. After iron, aluminum is the world ' s second most used metal, having a wide variety of applications in transportation and packaging. Most of the world ' s bauxite reserves and production are found in a wide belt around the equator, with Australia, Brazil ...

Oil and Gas Production Wastewater: Soil Contamination and ...

During oil and natural gas production, so-called “produced water” comprises the largest byproduct stream. In addition, many oil and gas operations are augmented via injection of hydraulic fracturing (HF) fluids into the formation. Both produced water and HF fluids may contain hundreds of individual chemicals, some known to be detrimental to public health and the environment. Oil ...

Bauxite and the Environment: Much Progress Mined. Uncategorized. March 3, 2005. No one can question the enormously positive impact that the bauxite/alumina industry has had on the Jamaican economy over the last 53 years. The sector is today the second largest foreign exchange earner, raking in some US$901 million last year (an 18 per cent ...

The paper serves as a brief overview of the history and trends in the management and use of bauxite residue, outlining: the dimensions of the problem; the characteristics of bauxite residue; how methods of storage and disposal have developed over time and the implications for bauxite residue use; an example of a soil less free rehabilitation method; the technically successful uses; the ...

ARTICLE: Addressing the Challenge of Bauxite Residue ...

The largest waste by-product generated in the Bayer bauxite refining process is bauxite residue, commonly called red mud. An enormous quantity of caustic red mud is generated worldwide every year, posing a very serious and alarming environmental and safety problem. The storage of red mud is a challenge for alumina refineries (Figure 1), as ...

Bauxite Mining and Alumina Refining

Typical deposits range in thickness from 3 to 15 m. The majority of the bauxite can be mined and processed without beneficiation (further treatment of the ore to concentrate the minerals), but the ore in the north of Brazil and in Vietnam has a high clay content and has to be washed before processing.

What Aluminum Extraction Really Does to the Environment ...

Particulates released during processing that are known to compromise air quality include combustion byproducts, caustic aerosols, dust from bauxite, limestone, charred lime, alumina and sodium salt. Compared to producing aluminum from raw bauxite, recycling old aluminum consumes just 5% of the energy and releases a mere 5% of the ...

Chapter 2. Production and Processing of Aluminum

Bauxite occurs mainly in the tropics and in some Mediterranean countries. Today, the main mining locations are in Latin America, Australia, India, and Africa. Bauxite is a weathered rock containing two forms of hydrated aluminum oxide, either mostly a monohydrate AlO(OH) in caustic bauxite, or mostly a trihydrate Al(OH) 3 in lateric bauxite.

Environmental Assessment: Primary Aluminum - Prepublication

The most promising substitutes are steel and wood in construction, and steel, plastic, glass, and paper in the container market. Primary domestic aluminum production in 1976 was 3.86 million metric tons, with a value of $3.8 billion (7). Table 2-3 summarizes the general 1976 statistics of the industry.

This type of solid waste processing operation is known as a refuse derived fuel (RDF) system, RDF is used to supplement other fuel sources in a ratio of 20% RDF to 80% soils fuels. It was reported that 29 RDF systems were operated in USA for power generation as early as in 1983. Processing 1250 to 18,000 tonnes of waste per week.

Industrial wastewater treatment - Wikipedia

Industrial wastewater treatment describes the processes used for treating wastewater that is produced by industries as an undesirable by-product. After treatment, the treated industrial wastewater (or effluent) may be reused or released to a sanitary sewer or to a surface water in the environment. Some industrial facilities generate wastewater that can be treated in sewage treatment plants.
