This report outlines Rheinbraun's technical concept for electricity production on the basis of biotechnologically solubilized lignite. Starting out from conventional lignite extraction (opencast mining technology), this concept includes, inter al, solubilization of the ground coal in bioreactors located near the deposits.

The Rhenish (Rhineland) lignite-mining region covers a 2,500km² area to the west of Cologne. RWE Power AG, which was created during 2003 by the merger of RWE Rheinbraun with other RWE interests, operates four large opencast mines in the district – Hambach, Garzweiler, Inden and Bergheim – which between them produced 96.2Mt of lignite in 2006.

The Tagebau Hambach is a large open-pit coal mine (German: Tagebau) in Niederzier and Elsdorf, North Rhine–Westphalia, Germany.It is operated by RWE and used for mining lignite.. The mine is on the site of the ancient Hambach Forest which was purchased by RWE in 1978. They then cut most of it down and cleared it to mine. Only 10% of the forest area remains.

Hambach opencast mine lies at the heart of the Rhenish lignite mining area, between the towns of Jülich and Elsdorf. The mine began operating in 1978, and it is currently 370 metres (1214 ft) deep. Its 85-square kilometre (53-square mile) area is home to 2.5 billion tonnes of lignite, buried up to 450 meters (1476 ft) deep.
The heating value of the lignite ranges between 7,100 and 10,500 kJ/kg and its moisture content between 50 and 60 %. The ash content of lignite amounts to about 2 %. In the run-of-mine lignite, this content can rise to more than 20 % which is due to dilutions caused during the deposit's genesis and in the course of mining.
