The mantle is the mostly-solid bulk of Earth's interior. The mantle lies between Earth's dense, super-heated core and its thin outer layer, the crust. The mantle is about 2,900 kilometers (1,802 miles) thick, and makes up a whopping 84% of Earth's total volume.

Inside Earth Worksheets

The uppermost part of the mantle and the crust together form a rigid layer called the lithosphere. Below the lithosphere is a soft layer called the asthenosphere. Beneath the asthenosphere, the mantle is solid. This solid material, called the lower mantle, extends all the way to Earth's core. The core is made mostly of the metals iron and nickel.

Crust and Mantle vs. Lithosphere and Asthenosphere

The mantle extends to the core-mantle interface at approximately 2900 km depth. Thus, the mantle contains the lower portion of the lithosphere, the asthenosphere, and the mesosphere. The crust is made of the upper portion of the lithosphere. The Inner and Outer Core The core-mantle interface is a change in mechanical properties (rock to liquid) and

The Interior of the Earth - USGS

The lower mantle, below the transition zone, is made up of relatively simple iron and magnesium silicate minerals, which change gradually with depth to very dense forms. Going from mantle to core, there is a marked decrease (about 30 percent) in earthquake wave velocity and a marked increase (about 30 percent) in density.
